What's your background in all this?
Since 2005 I have been involved in both building websites for other people and teaching courses for the chamber of commerce ebusiness club. ‘Working with WordPress’, ‘Blogging’, ‘Developing an effective web presence’ and ‘Creating engaging web content’.
How will you teach me what I need to know?
First of all I’ll spend some time understanding what it is you want to achieve. Then I’ll give you an honest answer as to what I feel will be the best package for your needs. I can create a special package to suit you, if that’s needed.
I’ll teach you remotely and by sharing tutorials to demonstrate ‘how to’, step by step.
What time of day do you teach people?
I can work either in the day time, eveinings or weekends, by prior arrangement.
What is a VPS server and what's so special about them?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) provides a far more secure and suitable hosting environment for a WordPress website.
The hosting you choose is one of the most important aspects of running a website. Cheap hosting means your website resides on a server which may also be home to hundreds of other websites. That means that at ‘peak’ times the power of the server to run all the websites on it at the same time can be seriously deminished. It also means that if Google blacklists one site on a shared server then that affects every other site on there too. Then there’s the higher likelihood of hacking…
All in all, with website hosting, you get what you pay for. Cheap hosting is not a good idea at all and while a VPS server costs a bit more it’s like opting to put premium fuel in your car. It does make a difference.
I'm unsure which package is right for me
That’s not a problem. I know very well that support needs can vary tremendously. Whether you need more training and support than offered in a particular package, or want me to finish the website for you, that’s okay. I’ll work with you to find what is going to work best to meet your needs.
Can I develop my website on an iPad or Tablet?
You can, but it’s really not ideal. A PC or a MAC is preferable.
You will be able to view your website as it will look on a laptop, tablet or mobile phone, a useful and necessary aspect of developing your website.
What happens if I need more support than the package I sign up for?
That’s not a problem. I can work with you to find what is going to work best to meet your needs.
What is image optimisation for the web?
When you upload photos to social media sites such as Facebook you don’t have to worry about the size of the photo. However, when it’s your own website ‘size matters’.
Images taken on our phone are actually quite large and it is easy to fill your hosting space quota if you don’t ‘optimise’ them for the web (do some magic to make them a smaller file size). A typical image taken with your phone might be 2024 – 1087 pixels. A typical website image might be 550 x 430 pixels. Quite a difference.
